Philosophy of Education

Aces Sports Academy is committed to providing a balanced curriculum for all students that addresses the whole child and guides children to an underlying understanding that they can apply to life beyond the classroom. This is achieved thru purposefully constructed small, intimate class sizes that allow teachers to differentiate their instruction to meet the needs of each individual student.

Our blended learning environment lends itself to cross-curricular activities which allows all subject areas to work together cohesively and build upon one another. At Aces we strive to foster individuals who perform at their highest ability in all aspects of life by addressing the whole child: Academically, Socially and Emotionally. We achieve this by:

We build a strong learning environment amongst learners by creating norms, rituals and routines that support student ownership and collaboration.

  • Connect topics to students’ personal lives and interests
  • Use standards and learning targets with clear intentionality
  • Engage learners in challenging tasks, with guidance to reflect on their own learning and understanding
  • Students learn to be metacognitive about their own thinking
  • Learners socially construct knowledge through purposeful and meaningful conversations

Learners reflect on their own personal habits where success or failure ultimately begin

Learners decide how best to share their new understandings with the community

Curriculum

Teachers tap into student interests through the workshop model, which consists of a short, whole-group lesson and extended time for differentiated-partner, small group and individual learning time, which allows each student to reach his or her full potential. Providing choice for both reading and writing creates an authentic learning environment full of passion and excitement. These choices provide an opportunity for critical thinking, self-reflection and decision-making.

Our math instruction is comprised of two anchor programs, Illustrative Mathematics and enVision Mathematics, that focus on implementing the common core state math standards while sparking discussion, perseverance, and a genuine understanding of mathematics.

Illustrative Math is a problem-based core curriculum designed to address content and practice standards to foster learning for all. Students learn by doing math, solving problems in mathematical and real-world contexts, and constructing arguments using precise language. Teachers can shift their instruction and facilitate student learning with high-leverage routines to guide learners to understand and make connections between concepts and procedures.

EnVision Mathematics combines problem-based learning and visual learning to deepen students’ conceptual understanding. Lessons start with Problem-Based Learning (PBL), where students must think critically about a real-world math problem, evaluate options, collaborate, and present solutions. This is followed by Visual Learning to solidify the underlying math concepts. It’s the best way to help kids better understand math ideas.

Aces Social Studies curriculum is dedicated to helping young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public as good citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world. Through integrated explorations of American history, world history, government, geography, and economics, students are given authentic opportunities to think critically, to develop an informed opinion, to research a topic effectively, to express their ideas both orally and in writing, and to listen to others who believe differently than themselves.

The Aces Sports Academy science program provides students with the opportunity to do independent or team research. It is the goal of Aces that scientific inquiry – combined with content – becomes the true expression of science and is essential to science education. As students engage in scientific inquiry, they learn that science is more than a set of facts or discrete content areas; it is a way of perceiving, interpreting and understanding the world around them. When students do the work of scientists, they become highly engaged, curious and motivated to find answers and solve problems.

ACES Sports Academy utilizes a leadership curriculum that equips students with the skills, habits, attitudes and knowledge to lead themselves, others, ideas and organizations well. Our program fosters confidence, curiosity, and innovation in our lifelong learners. Students are given the opportunity to learn basic economic and financial practices that they later use to create an entrepreneurial business with their classmates.

Every Friday students partake in learning which is centered around enrichment classes and passion projects. Students tap into their creative side during Art, Spanish and Music classes. Twice a week, students also partake in off-ice skills training where students focus on speed, agility, strength training and stretching.

Our goal is to help foster these children into the very best, caring, and kind humans that they can be. Therefore, each month ACES focuses school wide on a specific character trait through interactive activities, literature, games and conversation. Here is a list of the traits in which we cover: Acceptance, Kindness, Responsibility, Perseverance, Empathy, Mindfulness, Respect, and Integrity.
